….and we’re back from the U.S. Artists Show in Philadelphia, PA. We definitely had a great time and met some fantastic collectors, artists, students, appreciators, and dealers. If you were in town and able to pass by our booth, I’m sure you noticed a classic example of Dan Adel’s work. This one definitely turned heads and started some interesting conversations. There were two Adel’s at the booth, and it always blows my mind how many different ways the guy can describe the same subject matter and continue to make it interesting. He is always exploring value, edges, scale, and color with an adventurous and nearly scientific curiosity.

Maybe it’s because the rain just keeps pounding Greene Street, but while sorting through some old images today, I ran across this great painting and thought it would be appropriate for the moment. This is from the 2007 Daniel Adel solo show. The way he paints abstract forms is quite sublime. The subjects he selects always work on a tight realist level, and on a super abstract level simultaneously. This piece in particular was incredible in person. You HAVE to check out the details to really get the full force of this painting.

Adel has this incredible mastery of values. No matter how many different ways he approaches the canvas with mark-making, that strong sense of value control reigns supreme— even on the smallest levels. Incredible.

Just received a phone call about this little water painting by Daniel Adel called “Source No. 5.” It was featured in our last Small Works Exhibition in September, and it’s the first water painting we’ve had from Adel since 2007. He has this crazy fascination with the movement of the wind and water off the coast of the south of France. According to Adel, he will spend hours photographing water– hundred upon hundreds of images. Then return to the studio and study the photos in sequence to understand the pattern of movement. Rather than using one photo as reference, he uses a wealth of images to anticipate the way the water moves. This guy is brilliant, and probably a little crazy— either way, it makes for some amazing work.

Since we’re on the subject of masterful painting, let’s take a closer look at one of Daniel Adel’s newest paintings entitled “Arion”. Draping white fabric over a white sculpture, Adel is exploring form and light within a very limited pallet. It’s incredible to see how little “true white” actually exists within this piece. Also, notice his ability to effortlessly describe both hard and soft edges. It takes true brilliance to make something so challenging, seem so simple.

For all you Francophiles out there, here is a brand new piece from United States born/France based painter Daniel Adel. Adel claims that he is allergic to paintings of flowers and fruits, so his work explores a different aesthetic and subject matter than traditional still life.

Dan Adel is surely one of the most cerebral painters represented by the gallery. His work represents an interesting dichotomy where he is consciously creating works with a refined Modernist approach, while still having an emotional need to capture the classical beauty found in the relationship of paint and subject. Adel is wonderfully represented in our annual Small Works Show with pieces that deliver on his intellectual and emotional integrity.
