ART OF THE DAY: Joseph Todorovitch
by Michael P. on Jan.25, 2012, under Art of the Day, Joseph Todorovitch

In representational figurative painting, the dividing line between a master and a novice is the ability to paint hands. There is no physical element more telling of a painter’s abilities than a convincing set of human hands. Often, they are conveniently cropped out of portraits, or hidden in subtle ways. You know you’re dealing with real talent, when a painter confronts a pair of mitts and totally owns it. Joseph Todorovitch has managed to completely knock it out of the park on this one. Not only did he capture a convincing set of hands, but he managed to embrace the expressive qualities of them—- which to me is going above and beyond mastering anatomy and physiology. It’s one thing to understand anatomy, it’s a whole other thing to be able to use it as an instrument of expression. Todorovitch is a modern master, with a soft spoken technique, a true understanding of the human form, and the ability to reflect the human spirit.

ART OF THE DAY: Joseph Todorovitch
by Michael P. on Apr.22, 2011, under Art of the Day, Joseph Todorovitch
There is an incredible amount of talent coming to fruition in this whole contemporary realist painting scene. One of the fundamental questions that each painter has to answer is whether or not they aim to depict the modern world in an honest way, or create an environment that has a sense of timelessness. Each solution has it’s own merits, challenges, and points to resonate within a great audience. Joseph Todorovitch is a painter that opts to describe a contemporary environment. His style has all of the great technical prowess of the masters, while his subjects describe the world that HE is living in. Todorovitch has a penchant for illustrating young women equally saturated in vintage clothes and hopeless ennui. His soft brush strokes literally take the edge off their very specific youth, yet still manage to describe that ageless feeling of being all dressed up with nowhere to go.

Using subtle shifts in color, Joseph Todorovitch manages to breath life into each of his canvases. By avoiding the use of hard lines or bold contrast, Joseph can describe a series of moments in transition and suggest movement. Where a photograph can capture a single moment, Joseph can lead his viewers to visualize where his subjects were, what they are doing, and anticipate where they are going. As a painter, Joseph is a master of suggestion.

Joseph Todorovitch Live Painting Demo @Arcadia Gallery on October 16, 2010

Joseph Todorovitch opened his first East Coast One Man Exhibition with a live demo in front of fans, collectors, and fellow painters right here in the middle of our gallery. It was quite a scene with one of L.A.’s finest contemporary realists showing some New Yorkers how it’s done. Thanks to everyone for coming out to show support, and witness a modern master doing what he does best.
The show will be on display until October 28th. More photos of the demo below:

As we’re all gearing up with excitement for Joseph’s first solo show at Arcadia next month, Joseph was kind enough to send us a little taste of what’s to come. “Unique Profile” is a killer representation of Joseph’s incredible control over his own medium, working with an incredible sense of naturalism from thin to thick using his very understated pallet. There will be much more to come at his East Coast debut October 15th.

In early February a group of Arcadia’s artists took a trip out to Montreal for a once in a lifetime opportunity to see the largest collection of works from the esteemed John William Waterhouse.
This exhibition which has already traveled the world began its journey in December at the Groninger Museum in the Netherlands, then traveled to The Royal Academy Of Fine Arts, London and then finally closing at Montreal Museum of Fine Art (10/1/2009 –2/7/10). Jeremy, Jospesh, and Brad were fortunate enough to have made it out on the second to last day along with a large group of other artists and friends.

Julio Reyes @ the Arcadia booth with American Art Collector editor Amy Elliot

Julio Reyes was one of the many artists whose work was featured at our booth this month at the Los Angeles Art Show 2010. We received a bunch of new work for the art fair, most of which is posted below.
The show this year was at the LA Convention Center for the second year in a row, a marked improvement from the previous years spent at The Barker Hangar. Response this year was great, as there were lots of red dots scattered throughout the booth. Collectors seemed enthusiastic to be collecting again.
Joseph Todorovitch stopped by the booth for a while. He brought in a significant amount of new work including a piece called “Succulents” that he is submitting for the 2009/2010 Portrait Society of America competition. We are eagerly looking forward to his upcoming show with us in October 2010. Todorovitch also had a piece in a group show that same weekend called Who Killed The Music, which was curated by Will.I.Am, which also featured a new piece from Jeremy Lipking.
