Malcolm T. Liepke in Architectural Digest

by on Feb.04, 2012, under Malcolm T. Liepke, News

It’s one thing to name drop celebrities that stop by the gallery, or when their designers pick art for them. It’s a whole different story when celebrities publicly name drop painters they collect. Brooke Shields graces the cover of this month’s Architectural Digest with her Manhattan town house to reveal some really great works in her collection. In addition to personal gifts from Keith Haring, and the portrait commissions of her two daughters by Will Cotton, Shields shows off a classic Malcolm T. Liepke oil. A preview of this month’s issue is online at their website. Feel free to investigate for yourself– http://bit.ly/AhcFUG

BEHIND THE SCENES: Liepke 2011 Show

by on Nov.28, 2011, under Behind The Scenes, Malcolm T. Liepke

Just received a shipment of frames from Gala for the upcoming Liepke show. What we’re hearing is that there will be a total of 30 new works for the show.  It’s been a year since Liepke’s game changing “A Return To Beauty,” and I think it’s likely he will continue in that direction.  However, Liepke’s ability to explore the unexpected is what has made his work so vital and exciting to follow since day one.   The show opens December 10th (which is only 12 days away).  We have seen a few snap shots of works in progress.  We’re hoping to receive the majority of the show any day now, and (as always) we’re expecting to receive a few sopping wet stragglers the day before the show.  If the gallery doesn’t smell like oil paint the day of the show, then it’s not a true Liepke show.

ART OF THE DAY: Malcolm T. Liepke

by on May.23, 2011, under Art of the Day, Artists, Malcolm T. Liepke

Malcolm Liepke is one of the most influential figurative painters of the last 30 years.  That might sound like a sanctimonious claim, but I don’t think it’s an unrealistic one.  There are definitely a handful of painters out there trying to capture their own incarnation of Liepke’s thick, direct approach that lends to a certain emotional sensitivity.  More importantly, there are so many young artists that view him as a gateway  towards understanding the relevance of the same dead painters that have been putting high schoolers to sleep in art class slide shows since the 60′s— Degas, Sargent, Lautrec, Cassatt, Whistler—- He references those painters, but in a simplified way that really appeals to a contemporary audience.  His work reads as classic, but it also reads as something approachable, and physically possible by another human being.  It’s messy.  It’s beautifully flawed.  It shows evidence of an actual human being touching the canvas, as opposed to a cherub or some other inexplicable super human element.

His brush strokes are soooo simple, that they become inspirational.  His work has that kind of appeal that makes people want to do something in reaction to it– whether it’s buying a painting for themselves, googling the hell out of his work, or picking up a paint brush to figure out how the guy does it.  Whether you like his work or not, it’s hard to avoid his influence in the generation of figurative painters that has followed his wake.

ART OF THE DAY: Malcolm T. Liepke

by on May.04, 2011, under Art of the Day, Malcolm T. Liepke

This HAS to be one of the very first transparencies ever produced for Arcadia Gallery.  This is for a hand drawn lithograph from the very last series of prints ever produced by Malcolm T. Liepke.  It was the same lithography process that Toulouse Lautrec used in the 19th century.  When the giclee print was embraced by the mainstream (mall) art market in 2001, it literally killed the print market over night.  This great litho from Liepke marks the end of an era.

Upcoming Liepke Show: “A Return to Beauty”

by on Dec.10, 2010, under Artists, Malcolm T. Liepke

The paintings are hung and the lights are in position. The new Malcolm T. Liepke exhibition show- “A Return To Beauty” is ready for its grand opening tomorrow. This show is a total “game changer” for Malcolm T. Liepke, and seeing the work on the walls of the gallery is a reminder of why he has the international reputation he so richly deserves.

We strongly recommend seeing it for yourself tomorrow, Saturday December 11th, from 2pm to 6pm and come say hello to the man himself, and witness some of the most eloquently luscious oils to grace the walls of Arcadia Gallery….EVER.
