ART OF THE DAY: Ron Hicks
by Michael P. on Apr.15, 2011, under Artists

It’s always great to see one or two informal pieces from an artist, that give a sense of an artist’s process, and a clue as to how they think. With a show that consists primarily of fully realized narratives of figures in context, it’s a pleasure to see this little head study included in Ron Hicks’ new show. There is no grand narrative, or philosophical statement. This is just a brief conversation between an artist and his canvas. Like any great athlete, or musician, Hicks is making his craft look easy. This piece looks like an hour or two at the easel— and about 20 years focus.

SMALL WORKS: Julio Reyes
by Michael P. on Sep.22, 2010, under Artists, Julio Reyes
Julio Reyes is featured in our Annual Small Works Exhibition:

Julio Reyes "Candace in Yellow No. 1" Oil on Copper Copper- 10x8 Frame- 16.5x14.5
Arcadia’s newest wunderkind Julio Reyes continues to impress us with his die-hard artist spirit, subtle pallet, and flawless technique. Everything he touches has a level of awareness and care that few artists of any era are capable of. It’s rare to find someone so poetic about the process of stretching a canvas. These two new paintings on copper are an excellent example of Julio’s immense subtly in subject and color, while also really utilizing his surface as a part of the painting. We are greatly anticipating his one man debut at Arcadia in the Fall of 2011. Until then, these will have to keep our appetites at bay.

SMALL WORKS: Aron Wiesenfeld
by Michael P. on Sep.21, 2010, under Aron Wiesenfeld, Artists
Aron Wiesenfeld in the 2010 Small Works Show:

Aron Wiesenfeld "Scout" Oil on Canvas- 11x11, Frame- 12.5x12.5
Aron Wiesenfeld is one of those artists who is constantly moving forward. He is an artist willing to take risks with techniques and subjects that defy the conventions of his audience, and in doing so, he always arrives artistically in a place further than where he was before. By doing so, he is brilliantly arriving into a territory all his own that defies modern realism, not because his work is illustratively stylized, but because he is capturing what it feels to be human. These new pieces for the Small Works (especially “Scout”) are proof of his continuing momentum. Come see them in person September 23rd.
